THE NLU STORY

Founded 140 years ago in 1886 as a pioneering institution to prepare women as kindergarten teachers, NLU has continually evolved to meet our students’ needs. Today, NLU serves nearly 13,000 students annually across 80+ academic programs and at campuses in Illinois, Florida, and online. With more than 60% of students from low-income families, NLU is a powerful engine for social and economic mobility, preparing graduates to transform their lives, families, and communities. Dr. Nivine Megahed has served as NLU’s president for the past sixteen years with dedicated service and extraordinary leadership. The NLU community celebrates her accomplishments as she prepares to retire. Rooted in its founding commitment to transformative education, NLU remains a dedicated champion of access and equity. LANDMARK MOMENTS

1886 Elizabeth Harrison opens Miss Harrison’s Training School ; the modern American kindergarten movement begins. 1930 The college changes its name to the National College of Education (NCE) , and introduces the first four-year teacher-training program in Illinois. 1988 NLU’s Florida Campus is established in one of Tampa’s major business districts. It serves a diverse population nationwide with online and on-site opportunities. 1990 In recognition of the Louis family’s tremendous generosity, the institution is renamed National Louis University . 2016 NLU launched the Pathways Program , a new undergraduate experience designed to provide a supportive, quality, affordable, and equity- focused education to all learners. 2018 NLU acquired Kendall College , adding culinary and hospitality management programs. 2020 NLU launched Accelerate U , a “job-first” higher education model offering short-term, market-aligned, stackable credentials to underemployed learners seeking a rapid route to employment. 2023 NLU launched the School of Nursing to help address the national shortage of nurses and provide opportunities for students interested in healthcare careers.

Macquline King ’94 ’00 MEd ‘07 MEd ‘18 EdD Superintendent and CEO of Chicago Public Schools

Dr. King’s academic path began at City Colleges of Chicago, leading to a degree in Teacher Education from National Louis University. Dr. King’s excellence as a classroom teacher was defined by her steadfast commitment to fostering student success and growth. After 12 years of teaching in CPS classrooms, Dr. King was selected for the prestigious New Leaders Principal Preparation Program, a nationally- recognized principal preparation program on accelerating outcomes for all students. Dr. King spent time as principal in two elementary schools, Dumas Elementary School in Woodlawn and Courtenay Elementary, a designated Welcoming School for students impacted by the closures on Chicago’s North Side. In both of these school leadership roles, Dr. King had the unique opportunity to witness firsthand the

CPS’ Superintendent and CEO Dr. Macquline King brings to the role over 32 years of dedication, transformative leadership, and a deep commitment to equity and excellence in education. A proud daughter of Chicago, Dr. King’s journey is a living testament to resilience, perseverance, and the extraordinary power of education to change lives. Raised in Chicago, she attended Oakenwald North Elementary and the Metropolitan School of Studies, where the foundation of her educational journey was laid. As a young, single mother, she faced significant challenges, yet she proved that education is not just a pathway to knowledge but a transformative force capable of breaking cycles of adversity and uplifting not only individuals, but entire communities.

Honorable Lamont J. Robinson ‘12 MBA Alderman of the 4th Ward in the City of Chicago

Since 2018, Alderman Robinson has also served as the State Representative for the 5th district, where he has proven himself to be a tireless advocate for his constituents. He has worked hard to secure funding for critical infrastructure projects and social services, and his experience at the state level has given him a deep understanding of how government works.

Honorable Lamont J. Robinson is a lifelong Chicagoan who has dedicated his life to giving back to the city through public service, business, education, and youth mentorship. He is an accomplished businessman and holds an undergraduate degree in business marketing from Clark Atlanta University and an MBA from National Louis University. He has owned and operated The Robinson & Caban Insurance Group and served as a business professor at Harold Washington College. He also directed the Kappa Leadership Institute,

He is dedicated to working collaboratively with all stakeholders, including neighbors, community organizations, and other city officials, to address residents’ main concerns and make the 4th Ward a better place to live, work, and raise a family.

Now, as the newly elected Alderman of the 4th Ward, Alderman Robinson is committed to leveraging his experience to build a better Chicago for all residents. He plans to create a robust city services office that delivers responsive and accountable services to all residents, drives responsible economic development, and increases public safety.

Andrea Sáenz President and CEO of The Chicago Community Trust

Sáenz’s previous leadership roles include her work for the Chicago Public Library, where she led transformational efforts to redefine the role of libraries for a digital age. She also led local and national efforts to improve education systems at Chicago Public Schools, the U.S. Department of Education, and community-based organizations focused on increasing Latine career success. Recognized as one of Chicago’s influential leaders, Sáenz was featured on Crain’s Chicago Business’ “Who’s Who

Dave Pauldine Principal, Pauldine Enterprises LLC

In this role, he led an organization of 7,500 employees with peak revenues exceeding $1.4 billion. His career has taken him across all 50 U.S. states and internationally to Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, and the Philippines. Dave credits a pivotal moment in his career to his pursuit of a Master’s degree in Leadership, which transformed his approach to management from an “art” into a “science.” Today, he is a subject matter expert in strategic planning, organizational culture, ethics, and high-performing work teams.

Dave Pauldine is a veteran executive, leadership consultant, and speaker who has dedicated over 35 years to the private sector of higher education. As the founder and sole proprietor of Pauldine Enterprises LLC, Dave leverages his extensive background as a “battle-tested” leader to provide impactful keynote speaking, consulting, and leadership development programs. Throughout his distinguished career, Dave reached the highest levels of executive leadership, most notably serving as the President and CEO of DeVry University and The Keller Graduate School of Management.

He also recently completed a six-year term on the board of The Shelter for Abused Women & Children in Naples, Florida, where he chaired the Finance Committee. Dave holds a B.A. in Communication Arts from the University of Dayton and an M.A. in Leadership from the McGregor School at Antioch University. He and his wife of 38 years reside primarily in Naples, Florida, while spending part of their time in Chicago.

Known for a style that is less formal and “easy to listen to,” Dave specializes in translating complex executive lessons into practical, actionable insights for his clients. Beyond his corporate work, Dave is a seasoned board member with experience on over 15 non-profit and private sector boards. Since 2014, he has served on the board of QuinStreet (NASDAQ), where he chairs the Compensation Committee.

Dr. DaJonese Turner PhD in Community Psychology

Dr. DaJonese Turner is a doctoral candidate in Community Psychology whose work is grounded in both lived and clinical experience. Her research focuses on how community violence shapes relationships and well-being, particularly among Black women. She is committed to using psychology as a tool for community healing, advocacy, and meaningful social impact.

Dr. David Mikel Etheridge EdD in School Level Leadership

Dr. David Mikel Etheridge is an educator, school leader, and equity advocate rooted in the South Side of Chicagoland. He brings 13 years of high school mathematics teaching experience and two years of school leadership, both in communities he calls home. Dr. Etheridge is driven by one conviction: a child’s ZIP code should never determine the quality of their education.

Rachel Chenier is the Executive Director of the Family First Center, an organization born from her mother’s NLU doctoral research. Her work expands the Center’s transformative model from Lake County across Illinois. After a dedicated 23-year journey, she graduated from NLU in December 2025 with a perfect 4.0 GPA. She holds membership in the NSLS and Tau Sigma National Honor Societies. Rachel’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, legacy, and turning academic vision into community action.

She most recently served as Superintendent of Palos Heights School District 128, where she led the development and implementation of a Portrait of a Learner strategic plan grounded in competency-based learning, aligning instructional practices and organizational systems to support student success.

Her doctoral research, published in 2018, has reached a global audience, with thousands of downloads across more than 100 countries. A National Board Certified Teacher and certified leadership coach, Dr. Brownlow remains deeply committed to advancing the field of education and supporting the next generation of leaders.

She also serves as a site supervisor for administrative internships, is a former adjunct professor of educational leadership, and a statewide trainer for the Illinois State Board of Education. She has been a featured presenter for national organizations, including AASA and the Council for Exceptional Children, and has contributed to professional dialogue as a panelist and featured superintendent.

Chicago native Maryann Scarborough has been in the field of Early Childhood Education for over 40 years. Scarborough possesses a master’s degree in education, with a concentration in Early Childhood Leadership and Advocacy from National Louis University, and a Post-Master’s Certificate in Director’s Leadership from Erikson Institute.

Scarborough has earned professional licenses, credentials, and certifications which have helped her to provide comprehensive services to children and adults in the Early Childhood field.
