THE NLU STORY
Founded 140 years ago in 1886 as a pioneering institution to prepare women as kindergarten teachers, NLU has continually evolved to meet our students’ needs. Today, NLU serves nearly 13,000 students annually across 80+ academic programs and at campuses in Illinois, Florida, and online. With more than 60% of students from low-income families, NLU is a powerful engine for social and economic mobility, preparing graduates to transform their lives, families, and communities. Dr. Nivine Megahed has served as NLU’s president for the past sixteen years with dedicated service and extraordinary leadership. The NLU community celebrates her accomplishments as she prepares to retire. Rooted in its founding commitment to transformative education, NLU remains a dedicated champion of access and equity. By fostering vibrant learning communities where theory and practice converge, the university continues to empower dedicated learners to achieve enduring impact in their personal lives and professional spheres.
