Duty hours do NOT include required reading, exam preparation, or time spent commuting to and from the rotation site. In-hospital on-call duty will occur at a frequency of no more than every fourth night, averaged over the rotation period. After an on-call shift, the student is expected to complete morning rounds and must leave by 12:00 noon on the post-call day. Rotation Scheduling Policy The assignment of students to clinical rotation sites is the responsibility of the Director of Clinical Education. The NLU PA Program has affiliation agreements with physicians, physician assistants, and healthcare institutions that provide supervised clinical practice experience (SCPE) placements. Students may not solicit or arrange their own clinical rotation sites or trade rotations with other students. Placements will not take into consideration a student's choice of residence location; students will be required to travel to assigned clinical sites regardless of distance. The Director of Clinical Education will individually match students with a schedule that best meets their learning needs using input from each student about their elective and rotation preferences, in addition to feedback from program faculty and staff. Student assignments are typically made during the second half of the didactic year. Factors influencing placement include: the number of available sites, student interest in a specialty, student academic performance and professionalism record, and site/preceptor availability. Following finalization of the rotation schedule, requests for changes will be limited to emergency situations only and evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Any such request must be submitted in writing to the Director of Clinical Education promptly. Students should anticipate travel outside of the local area for a minimum of one or two rotations, during which time housing and transportation are the responsibility of the student. Global Health Trips Global health trips may be available on a limited basis during the clinical year. All requests must be submitted in writing to the Director of Clinical Education at least 90 days in advance. Students may not miss more than six (6) days of any rotation, and trips may not coincide with any required program activity or return-to-campus event. Students should not submit payment or make arrangements for a trip until written approval from the Director of Clinical Education has been received. Students must obtain appropriate immunizations and follow CDC recommendations for international travel. Students who participate in a global health trip may be required to complete an additional assignment at the discretion of the PA faculty.
