Dissertation Manual 2023_

register for a dissertation course each term (i.e., PSYD 856, 857, 859). Each course has specific tasks that must be completed before the student may move to the next course. Students who do not complete the required tasks may register for ONE term of extension per course (e.g., PSYD 856X, 857X, 859X). Thus, students may register for a maximum of six semesters of dissertation and must complete the dissertation by the end of the final term of registration. A Leave of Absence from this requirement may be granted only in cases of medical or personal emergency. If students have any questions regarding these policies, they should contact the Program Director.

The dissertation consists of three main phases: 1. Development of the research proposal 2. Development of the final draft 3. Publishing (to the NLU Commons) and Dissemination

For a detailed breakdown of these phases, see Appendix A: Dissertation Timeline and Checklist.

Important: Students should anticipate that it will take approximately 12-18 months to complete the dissertation. Faculty are unavailable during July and August to work on dissertations. Students are encouraged to consult with their chairs when planning for summer.

Students are required to demonstrate clear and consistent progress on their dissertation throughout their enrollment in the dissertation sequence. Students are encouraged to work closely with their faculty chair to develop a plan and timetable for completion of their dissertation . Faculty may refer students for professional writing instruction if writing difficulties impede their progress in completion of the dissertation .
