NLU PA Program — Didactic Year Handbook

Assessment Strategies: Summative written examination and Summative OSCEs administered four months prior to graduation (≥80% cohort pass rate); and clinical preceptor evaluations, clinical and technical skills domain (≥80% of cohort attains “Meets Expectations”).

PLO 4 — Professional Behaviors

Outcome Statement: Graduates will demonstrate ethical behavior, accountability, integrity, respect for diversity, adherence to legal and regulatory standards, interprofessional collaboration, and commitment to the values of the PA profession. Curricular Alignment: The Physician Assistant Profession I & II; Medical Ethics and Legal Medicine; Public Health; all SOAR courses; and all SCPEs. Assessment Strategies: Timely attendance in the didactic and clinical curriculum (student self-assessment Likert rating >3 by ≥80% of cohort); professionalism evaluated in each SOAR course through both a student self-assessment and a faculty assessment using the NLU PA Professionalism Rubric (benchmark: Likert rating >3 for ≥80% of the cohort, assessed by both student and faculty in at least two of three rubric categories); and clinical preceptor professionalism ratings (≥80% of cohort scores “Meets”). The NLU PA Program Professionalism Assessment and Faculty/Student Self-Assessment Rubric evaluates professionalism across defined categories (including attendance and reliability) using a four- point scale (Proficient – 4, Developing – 3, Insufficient – 2, Remediation required). A student who does not achieve a rating above 3 in categories 1–2 must begin remediation; if remediation is not completed by the end of the term, the student receives no professionalism assessment credit for that term. The full rubric, including category-specific anchor descriptions and remediation strategies, is maintained by the Program and administered each SOAR course.

PLO 5 — Clinical Reasoning and Problem-Solving Abilities

Outcome Statement: Graduates will engage in self-assessment, incorporate feedback, apply evidence- based medicine principles, and participate in quality improvement to enhance patient outcomes in clinical practice. Curricular Alignment: Physical Examination and Documentation I & II; Clinical Procedure Skills I & II; Adult Medicine I & II; Pediatric Medicine I & II; Medical Research and Information Literacy; SOAR I–VIII; and all SCPEs. Assessment Strategies: Peer review evaluation of the Capstone Project and presentation during the clinical year, addressing quality-improvement clinical practices (≥80% of the cohort scores ≥ “Acceptable”); Summative OSCEs administered four months prior to graduation and aggregated preceptor evaluation scores (≥80% cohort pass rate); and student self-assessment aggregated throughout SOAR I– VIII (Likert rating >3 for ≥80% of the cohort, in at least two of three sections).
