1. Purpose
The National Louis University (NLU) Physician Assistant (PA) Program is a rigorous, full-time graduate professional program requiring substantial academic preparation, classroom and laboratory participation, clinical skills development, assessment, and supervised clinical practice experiences. The purpose of this policy is to establish clear expectations regarding student employment while enrolled in the PA Program and to ensure that employment does not interfere with a student’s ability to meet the academic, clinical, professional, and attendance requirements of the curriculum. This policy is consistent with the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) Accreditation Standards for Physician Assistant Education, Sixth Edition, including Standard A3.14i regarding the program’s published policy on student employment.
2. Policy Statement
The NLU Physician Assistant Program strongly discourages students from maintaining employment while enrolled in the program . The PA curriculum is a demanding, full-time graduate professional program. Students are expected to devote the time and attention necessary to successfully complete all academic, clinical, professional, and program requirements. Students who elect to maintain employment while enrolled in the program do so with the understanding that employment is an outside commitment and will not be considered a basis for modifying, reducing, rescheduling, or otherwise accommodating program requirements . Students are responsible for ensuring that any employment they choose to maintain does not interfere with their ability to meet all program requirements.
3. Full-Time Professional Education Expectations
The NLU PA Program is structured as a full-time professional education program. Students should anticipate that successful completion of the program will require substantial time outside scheduled instructional and clinical hours.
Students are expected to allocate sufficient time for:
1. Preparation for lectures and other instructional activities.
