PAID ST letter to MENTOR teacher 2024-2025

NCE’s 2023-2024 fiscal year, illustrating how the College is following through with our commitment to the betterment of education on both a local and national level.

Dear Mentor Teacher. We are grateful for your willingness to mentor a paid practicum 2/student teacher from National Louis University. The state of Illinois licensure policies require an on- site/school-based mentor during paid p2/student teaching. The purpose of this letter is to clarify the supervision schedule and requirements of the paid experience. The school-based mentor is to observe the paid p2/student teacher a minimum of two times during the practicum 2 term and 2 times during the student teaching term. These observations should be documented (any written format will suffice) and afterwards the written feedback should be shared with the student teacher in a post- observation conference. If you choose to conduct more observations, this can only benefit the paid p2/student teacher. You will receive an email with directions to access an online evaluation form (Competency Appraisal) to provide feedback during these two terms. Once completed, this evaluation feedback will be shared in a conference setting, with the paid student teacher, school-based mentor, and university supervisor in attendance (or on Zoom). A university supervisor will be on-site (or on Zoom) to conduct observations of the paid p2/student teacher to provide feedback. There are two required observations in P2 and four during student teaching. Please note that the role of the supervisor is to oversee the implementation of the university requirements related to lesson planning and curriculum development. Additionally, the university supervisor will complete the Competency Appraisal as outlined above. In consultation with university faculty, the university supervisor will be responsible for assigning a grade to the paid student teacher. We thank you for your work with National Louis University in order to successfully implement the paid p2/student teaching experience. The NLU supervisor will be meeting with you to discuss the requirements for the linked experience. Please feel free to reach out to me, as well, with any questions you have during the paid p2/student teaching term.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jamillah Gilbert Director, Teacher Preparation at NLU jgilbert11@nl.edu
