Clinical Year Handbook Final

• Response to Feedback: Professionalism includes the ability to accept constructive criticism gracefully and implement changes in behavior or clinical practice immediately. • Punctuality: Students must arrive at the clinical site at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time or as directed by the preceptor. • Attendance: Clinical year attendance is mandatory. Any unexcused absence or failure to notify both the site and the Clinical Coordinator of an emergency absence is a lapse in professionalism. • Clinical Logs: Accurate tracking of patient encounters and procedures must be completed daily. Failure to maintain logs may result in a "Needs Improvement" or "Unsatisfactory" rating in professionalism. • Social Media: Students are prohibited from posting any information regarding clinical sites, preceptors, or patients on social media platforms. Photos taken within clinical facilities are strictly forbidden. • Electronic Medical Records (EMR): Students may only access the records of patients they are directly involved in treating. Using EMR access to view the records of friends, family, or themselves is a violation of federal law and program policy. • Advocacy for Learning: Students are expected to be proactive and self-directed learners. This includes reporting to rotations prepared to discuss core medical topics, seeking out clinical opportunities and procedures, and actively engaging in the "advocacy for learning" by identifying personal knowledge gaps and seeking resources to fill them. Assessment Professionalism is assessed in every rotation through: • Preceptor Evaluations : Specifically measuring interpersonal skills and reliability. • Faculty Observation: Monitoring communication, attendance, and adherence to program policies. • Rubric-Based Evaluation: Assessments based on the four pillars of Involvement, Interaction, Integrity, and Introspection. Lapses in Professionalism: • Minor Lapses: (e.g., occasional tardiness, dress code infraction) may result in a formal warning and/or a Professionalism Improvement Plan (PIP).
