Editing the Final Draft

Students are required to use a professional editor to edit the final dissertation manuscript. Students will contract with and pay the editor directly.

Important: All final drafts must be sent to an approved professional editor. It is the student’s responsibility to contract with an editor, send the draft to them, and pay them for their work.

Students may choose an editor from the ISPP Approved Editor List (available in the Microsoft Teams ISPP Student Resources channel ) or request permission to use a different editor.

Process for Requesting Unapproved Editors Students may request permission to hire an editor who is not on the pre-approved editor list. Note that the editor must agree to: • Use track changes for making edits • Use the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th Edition) (2020) for grammar and style • Use the ISPP Dissertation Manual for program-specific style and formatting requirements (e.g., title page formatting, margins and font size, etc...). If a student wishes to hire an editor who is not already approved, they must send the Program Director the link to that person’s website and/or a copy of the person’s resume. In the email request, the student must attest that the editor will meet the three program expectations noted above. The student will then be notified of the status of their request.

Roles and Responsibilities

Student Responsibilities: The student bears primary responsibility for the writing and formatting of the dissertation. Students' writing should be grammatically correct, and the presentation of their ideas should be clear, logical, and done in full accordance with APA style (7 th edition). Students should pay particular attention to using active voice and to APA rules concerning verb tense and verb, as these account for most editing corrections. The chair may refer or require that students use a writing instructor to assure appropriate skills in professional writing. Students are encouraged to make use of the Learning Support and Library Services to aid with writing and APA style questions. The APA also regularly updates their Grammar and Style website: https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines. In addition, students are encouraged to use tools like Grammarly, spellings and grammar checks in Word to support accuracy and clarity with their writing.
