Dissertation Manual 2023_

Students must obtain their chair’s approval for the following: o Selecting committee members o Scheduling committee meetings o Sending drafts to the readers o Submitting an IRB application o Submitting a research dissemination plan o Submitting research for a conference proposal or publication

Reader’s Role Readers are involved in all major parts of the dissertation process. Readers will: • Review the draft proposal and provide feedback. • Attend the Proposal Meeting (or watch a recording of the meeting if attendance is not possible). • Complete Scholarship Competency Evaluation rubrics for the proposal and final dissertation. • Review of the final dissertation draft and provide feedback. Any questions or suggestions for changes should be communicated both to the student and chair before readers give their final approval for the proposal. • Attend the public defense of the project, should the student choose this as their means of dissemination. Readers may also choose to be more involved, e.g., consulting on research design, assisting with literature searches, facilitating recruitment, and reviewing drafts more frequently than listed above. Extra involvement is always welcome but not required. Communicating with Committee Members Students should develop a communication plan with their chair and with the other members of the dissertation committee at the outset of the project. All communication between the student and members of the dissertation committee should be timely, respectful, and professional. The student and their chair should communicate regularly. The student is responsible for initiating communication, asking for help when needed, and informing the chair about any concerns, such as feedback from readers.

Meeting with the Committee: Outside of the Proposal Meeting, students should discuss ideas and concerns first with their chairs. If the chair approves, a meeting with the whole committee can be organized.

Important: Students need their chair’s approval before selecting readers, distributing drafts to readers or the editor, applying to the IRB, and disseminating research findings.
