NLU Scholarship & Thought Leadership Annual Report 2026

LEADING TODAY

The virtual conference brought together the i.e. special issue contributors, teacher educators, instructional designers, and practitioners from across the country to share emerging evidence, practical strategies, and critical perspectives on AI in education. Featured practitioner sessions included Swati Tanwar (Lake Forest Academy) on rethinking assessment in the age of AI, Adam Darlage (Oakton College) on educational acceleration and its costs, Mike Lubelfeld (North Shore School District 112) on moving from urgency to agency, and Paulette Grissett (Rich Township High School) on using AI to elevate rigor. Rather than focusing solely on technology, the conference highlighted responsible AI implementation, culturally responsive teaching, critical AI literacy, and educator preparation— reinforcing NLU’s commitment to preparing educators who can thoughtfully evaluate and apply AI to improve learning. To extend the conference’s impact beyond the event itself, NLU created a publicly accessible collection of presentation recordings, materials, and practical resources, providing educators with an ongoing repository for learning and implementation. The conference was conceptualized by Dr. Eun Kyung Ko and developed by a collaborative NLU planning team that included Vishodana Thamotharan, Shaunti Knauth, Antonina Lukenchuk, Neal Green, Jon Oelke, and Sara-Anne Lanman .
