Increasing Research Capacity • NCE Launches first graduate programs, advancing the university towards becoming a center for advanced professional education and research. Increasing Research Capacity • Transition from single-purpose elementary education focus to comprehensive institution, with graduate education expanding greatly into programs including curriculum, reading and administration. Influential practices and works • NCE provides teacher training for Peace Corps Launch. • NCE becomes an early regional leader in training teachers in responding to learning differences; forms Child Development Partnerships with school districts to develop and test early intervention strategies. • Faculty integrate active educational research into teacher training through on-campus Lab School. • NCE publishes Young People’s Science Encyclopedia, a 20-volume reference set. • GI Bill doubles college enrollment and reshapes campuses. • Federal investment in scientific research expands dramatically, strengthening universities as research centers.

• Transistor is invented, revolutionizing electronics. • Jet aircraft revolutionizes aviation during and after World War II. • US emerges from war as a leading global power. • First moon landing • Civil Rights challenges discrimination and leads to landmark legislation. • Peace Corps launches. • Women’s Movement transforms women’s opportunities. • Gay Liberation Movement starts the fight for LGBTQ rights. • Microprocessors and personal computers emerge.
